Our after dinner
speakers cover a wide range of topics, ranging from the light
hearted to thought provoking. Topics have included the work of
the Arbitration, Conciliation and Advisory Service (ACAS),
Cycling Holidays in France, the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa
Research Association (DEBRA), Public Relations, Tackling Drugs
Together, The Trans Siberian Express and the History of Bramhall
Hall.
Once a month, we have a committee night where members get
together to plan and progress the club's activities. This Web
page, for example, has been produced as part of the International
Committee's activities this year.
We also have special meetings on occasions such as our formal
Charter Night (our birthday celebration!) in September and the
President's Evening with our partners in March.
We raise funds for our charitable donations in a number of
ways, including providing Father
Christmas and helpers at the local Barton Grange Garden
Centre, social evenings of many kinds, and sponsored activities
(we have helped to run Swimathons, and have walked Morecambe
Bay!).
Recently
members of the Club took the opportunity to visit the Neuro Muscular
Centre at Winsford. We had previously welcomed the founder of the
NMC, Sarah Kelly at a meeting and were impressed with the work she
and the Centre were doing.
The Centre is a day centre for children suffering
from Neuro Muscular problems and offers physiotherapy to the
children as well as guidance to parents.
Whilst we were at the NMC, we presented a cheque for
£2500 to Sarah for the purchase of a stretching machine. The
money was raised from a variety of activities, one of which was walking
on hot coals !
We also help our community in other ways. We maintain two
local footpaths, and we drive blind and partially sighted people
to a dance evening weekly. We even provided the labour to build
the Millennium Bridge in Bramhall Park in 2000 ! Recently we
ran the BBQ at a Jazz Night organised by the local Rugby Club
and also raised nearly £1000 for charity.
We have a varied and active social programme, providing great
relaxation and entertainment. Recent events have included a
barbecue, a house party, Go Karting, walking (a weekly event for
some retired members!), a Murder Mystery dinner, a race night, a
Big Band dance, snooker tournament, bowls, a pub games night, a
visit to Ladies Day at Chester Races and theatre visits.
